Zip screens for a wind-proof outdoor room

Vertical screens running in zipped aluminium side channels — sun, wind and insects sealed out, without a single flap in the south-easter.

Covered Camps Bay deck enclosed with zip-track screens, ocean visible through the mesh fabric
The indoor-outdoor glass that makes an enclosed deck worth having.

An ordinary drop screen flaps and works its way out of its guides the moment real wind gets involved — and on the Atlantic seaboard, real wind is the default, not the exception. A zip screen’s fabric edge is welded into a zipper that runs captive in aluminium side channels, so there’s no gap for the south-easter to get hold of. It’s the product that turned an exposed Camps Bay deck into a usable outdoor room, wind or no wind.

Fabric choices

  • Sunscreen mesh (various openness) — keeps the view out, cuts glare and UV, and closes the deck to insects while holding daytime privacy.
  • Clear PVC / crystal panels — a wind-and-rain-proof enclosure that keeps the Atlantic view fully visible; the honest choice for a winter braai room.
  • Blockout options where a west-facing screen needs to stop the late sun outright.

Built for this coastline

Motorisation is standard on wide spans, and a wind sensor for automatic retraction is the sensible spec for any position with real south-easter exposure — the same argument that applies to awnings applies here. Spans run wide, channels are colour-matched to the structure, and multi-screen patio enclosures are one of the bigger jobs we quote on this stretch of coast.

Zip screens do the same job on every exposed deck along this run of coast — sealing out the south-easter in Bantry Bay and Llandudno, and finishing an indoor-outdoor room in Clifton or Fresnaye.
